Welcome to Class!

Welcome to the “Sunday School Teacher Training Class”. This is a Four week class designed to heighten awareness and increase skills to build effectiveness in the Sunday School class.

My name is Kenton Daugherty and I am excited about facilitating this class. Jeani Lutz will work as a co-facilitator.

Training has been an important aspect of my pastoral ministry for the last few years and I see the need for it in more churches. It is my hope you will experience my personal passion for this crucial part of ministry.

YOU ARE PIONEERS in a bold new approach to helping others minister to youth

in our churches. I want to thank you in advance for being willing to do this for your classes, others and for God.

I will do my best to answer as many of your question about the mechanics of the class as possible.

Normally I will ask you to login on

Monday (This week on Tuesday due to Labor day)

Please respond to one person each session.

If possible find an individual that is teaching the same general age group you are dealing with.

Also when you start your comments please follow this guideline:

My name is Steve Grissom from the Mitchell Church.I am the Superintendent,I have taught the teen class also middler boys.I have been superintendent off and on for sometime.

Our childrens dept. is going down very swiftly.Nothing seems to work at this time.I think we almost have to start from scratch.People are moving because of thier jobs. The ones we have in SS has now little ones. The children we have are from outside the church. We couldn't get anyone to head up the childrens dept.,so we have to organize from our teachers. We some program that will work for us.Sometimes we have 10 present then times we have maybe 5 total.I know it is very discourageing for our teachers who prepare every for sunday.I have told them if they have on child to go ahead and do the lesson.

We try to have special times but we don't get any response for helpers. Is anyone going through the same things?

Steve,
I am the Children's Director in Columbus. I started in June and I DID have to start from scratch. I'm not sure if you are referring to Children's Church, or just SS, but I guess it applies to both. Here, it was crazy in Children's Church. No discipline, no structure, no consistency, no help. I have 1 consistent helper and we can run anywhere from 10-25, all different kids each week. I know that God led in the lessons we started. I felt a burden to get the kids back to basics. We started with teaching about the Bible - what it is, where it came from, why it is true. Then God - who He is, why he's worthy. Then Worship - what it is and why we do it. That's where we are right now. I've spent several weeks on each of these items and it is working!!!!! They are getting it!!!! They are coming consistently, quieting down and listening and participating. The first thing I did was set boundaries. We have 2 - Be Safe and Be Respectful (each encompasses a lot of things, but limiting to 2 is easier for the kids to remember, notice I did not call them "rules"). The kids came up with the Consequences (1st instance Warning, 2nd - surrender some $ for Shekle Shak, 3rd - talk to parents) We also started a reward system - Shekle Shak. They get $ for coming, bringing their bibles and bringing friends and then once a month they get to spend that money on reward items. It's worked very well so far. I wish you the best, I know that one of my biggest frustrations in the beginning was getting consistent attenders. We are getting there! Getting Helpers is still a problem, I have a bigger issue with getting Sunday School Teachers - so you are blessed there! But as the parents are seeing the kids WANT to be here, they are starting to WANT to be here too. I don't know if this helps you any.
Regina
